Nazrul Islam M.A (DU), is a retired Professor of Geography and Environment at the University of Dhaka, and the Founder-Chair of the Centre for Urban Studies (CUS), Dhaka. He also taught at the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok (1982-86). He served as the Chairman of the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh during 2007-2011, Chairman of the Board of Dhaka Water and Sewerage Authority (DWASA) during 1999-2002 and Convenor of the Task Force on Social Implications of Urbanization, (GoB, 1990-91). Professor Islam was President of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh (2012 & 2013). He is an Honorary Fellow of Bangla Academy, Advisor of Bangladesh Environment Movement (BAPA), and a Member of the National Steering Committee of Bangladesh Urban Forum (BUF) and an Advisory Committee Member the Bangladesh Delta Plan. An eminent urban researcher and urbanist he led several large research teams and authored a number of books on urbanization, urban development and urban poverty. He has participated in Habitat 3 and other UN programmes on urbanization. He also writes on contemporary art.
